Coed Doubles League Rules

Beach Rules

1 – The first ball, whether on a serve or a rally, cannot be received open hand, unless it is “hard driven.”  A hard driven ball MUST have these 3 characteristics; it must be hit with speed, it must be hit in a straight line (zero arc), and it must be hit at a downward angle.

2 – To “set” the ball over the net the player must push the ball parallel to their body and the ball must come out with very little spin (less than 1 full rotation).  Any other “set” that goes over the net is a foul.

3 – No open hand dinks or tips are allowed.  Tips are allowed, but they cannot be performed with extended finger action.  Tips must be directed by a poke with the very tips of the fingers or knuckles, or some similar action in which the ball is only in contact with the player for a split second.

4 – A block DOES count as the first contact.  After a block, the blocking player may contact the ball a 2nd time, but following the block the blocking team only has 2 remaining contacts to send the ball over the net.

5 – A player may pass under the net when playing a ball, however; if the player touches an opponent or interferes with their opponent’s ability to play the ball is it a foul.

When serving, the guys must serve to the guys.  If the guy serves the girl it is NOT a foul, and play continues as normal.  If the guy repeatedly serves the girl, or is intentionally serving the girl the referee should report this to the League Director.  The League Director reserves the right to forfeit a team’s games for repeatedly ignoring this rule.

Playoffs

Every team participating in the league will qualify for the playoffs.

Since some teams play more games than others, (due to some teams having byes and some not) win percentage will be used to determine a team’s seed going into the playoffs.  If there is a tie between 2 teams that played each other during the season, the team that won the season match will be seeded higher.  If there is a tie and the 2 teams did not play each other the team with the most total points during the season will be seeded higher.

The playoffs will consist of a single elimination tournament.  All rounds prior to the semi finals will be decided by 1 game.  The semi final and final rounds will be determined by a 2 out of 3 match.
